Registries publish which organisation holds which block, so country and provider are close to factual. Everything more precise is inference layered on top.

Why mobile connections drift so far

On a mobile network your traffic does not leave the internet where you are standing. It travels across the carrier’s own network to a gateway, sometimes one of only a handful serving an entire country, and only there does it acquire the public address the world sees. A phone in a coastal town can legitimately appear to be in the capital.

Carrier-grade NAT compounds this: thousands of subscribers share one public address, so whatever location that address carries is an average of all of them.

When the browser disagrees with the IP

Your browser knows its own time zone, set by your operating system. If that disagrees with the time zone derived from your IP address, something is shifting your traffic — usually a VPN or a proxy. It is a good cross-check, and one that plenty of VPNs fail.

Precise location is a different mechanism

Websites that know exactly where you are did not get it from your IP. They asked, and you allowed the browser’s geolocation permission, which uses GPS and nearby Wi-Fi networks. That prompt is the boundary: without it, a site has the estimate above and nothing better.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is IP geolocation?

Country is right roughly 95–99% of the time. City is right often enough to be useful and wrong often enough to be annoying — typically within 50 km in dense urban areas, much worse for rural and mobile connections.

Why does my IP say I am in another city?

Providers register address blocks to an administrative centre and then use them across a whole region. Mobile networks are worse still: your traffic may leave the carrier's network from a gateway in an entirely different part of the country.

Can someone find my house from my IP address?

No. The databases behind geolocation simply do not contain that. A street address can only be obtained from the provider itself, and providers release it to law enforcement on legal process, not to websites.

Why do the coordinates look oddly round?

When a database knows only the country or the region, it returns that area's centroid. Several well-known 'mystery' locations are nothing more than the geographic centre of a country.
